Hi fellow teachers

I'm putting together a computer-based resource/kit for a technology group, and I've recruited you all as my personal think tank. ;)

What sort of Science/English/HSIE topics do you find difficult to find resources for?
What units are you doing at the moment with your class?

Basically my resource will be a series of stimuli to encourage kids to ask questions regarding the topic. A friend of mine is focusing on gravity so the topics can be very specific rather than broad.

OT - my class reacted fairly strongly to Steve Irwin's death.
We had to take some time to discuss it in class today

Introduction... [Aug. 23rd, 2006|11:28 pm]

emotivating
What age group do you teach? Primary, secondary, etc?
I aim to teach university English. But for now, I’m a mere undergraduate at the great sandstone pile that is sydney_uni.

Over the years, I’ve tutored in several high-school subjects including English, Drama, Music, and History; I’ve taught/mentored a class of first year Education students at sydney_uni; and I’ve been employed as a casual drama teacher at Lane Cove Primary School – a traumatic experience.

If primary, what year group are you teaching at the moment?
Recently, I’ve taught from third grade through to sixth.

If secondary tertiary, which subject areas do you teach?
English literature.

Are you at a metropolitan/suburban/regional/rural school?
In terms of classroom teaching, it’s been all metropolitan and suburban, but a lot of my tutoring work has come from the Central Coast area.

How long have you been teaching?
I’ve been tutoring for several years, but I started taking classes this year.

Are you casual or full-time?
Casual whilst studying.

Do you teach any extra-curriculars?
In the past, I’ve given guitar lessons but was forced into quitting for my sanity’s sake.

What do you most enjoy about teaching?
I just like to think I’m helping someone :)

What do you least enjoy about teaching?
One particular third-grader from Lane Cove. I think his name was Damien!

What age group do you teach? Primary, secondary, etc?
I want to teach secondary school. Currently I tutor K-10 at a maths tutoring centre and HSC private tutoring.

If primary, what year group are you teaching at the moment?
N/A

If secondary, which subject areas do you teach?
I want to teach History as my main subject and English or Spanish, depending on what the DET lets me teach.

Are you at a metropolitan/suburban/regional/rural school?
I'm currently tutoring suburban, but I'm thinking of going regional for the first couple of years once I've qualified. My boyfriend's family live an hour out of Dubbo, so maybe head to the Orange area (he has a house there) so that I've got something of a support network out there.

How long have you been teaching?
I've been tutoring for over four years, and did tennis coaching for a few years from 2000. I plan to do the MTeach next year, so I'll be qualified Term IV 2008...

Are you casual or full-time?
Part-time tutoring while I'm studying.

Do you teach any extra-curriculars?
I'd like to do sport, for sure, and maybe some kind of music liaison position (I know when I was at school we needed a teacher to accompany band tours; that'd be ace).

What do you most enjoy about teaching?
The feeling that I'm helping young people reach their potential. There's also the whole philosophy of education and furthering opportunities etc, but I'm not thinking about that when I'm seeing a student struggle with and overcome trig functions!

What do you least enjoy about teaching?
When I get frustrated by students who can't understand a topic, when really I need to remain calm so that I can find a better way of explaining it, the way that they'll understand.

I started answering the questions but they weren’t really relevant for me, so I’ll just tell you about myself.

Name: Alissha
Age: 21

I am currently working full time in the city (Sydney) as an administrative assistant. This year I started a B Arts/B Teaching via distance at UNE which qualifies me to teach secondary but I am hoping to change to B General Studies / B Teaching next year (I tried when I first applied last year but it was full) which will qualify me to do primary.

I currently am doing 2 units per semester – a part time load – but am hoping to increase this to 3 next year. Unfortunately I have to work because of bills etc so this degree is going to take me longer than normal.

I am finding Distance Education a little hard, but find going to the residential schools very beneficial. At the moment, knowing that I will eventually be a teacher is what’s getting me through my crappy job and the weekends packed with study.

I really want to become a teacher because I think teaching is rewarding. I know its hard work but I think it’d definitely be rewarding. I know it sounds corny but I want to make a difference or feel like I’m helping someone/society even if it’s just a little. Working in the Stock market Industry where everyone is constantly focussed on making more and more money for the last 3 years, has really shown me this is not where I want to be for the rest of my life.

I'm not actually a teacher, but my fiance is completing her TPC (TAFE equivalent of the HSC) and is planning on going into a teaching degree next year.

My question is... she is looking at doing either Primary education at Macquarie or Secondary at UWS Nepean. Does anyone have any advice that might be usefull to her? Or past exerience with these courses?

Cheers

When I create a wonderful learning experience that really connects into the students' real lives. Also, when students work well in a group situation.
And of course, who doesn't love watching the "light switch on" in kids who have been really struggling to understand a concept

What do you least enjoy about teaching?

Not sure if I should admit this, but I love most every KLA except English
